My grandmother's parents didn't want her to marry my grandfather because he was just a farmer, and they were merchants, so it was a step down socially. They skipped a revival service one Sunday night to elope. They told everyone the next day, then they set up housekeeping just north of Albany. In the 1930s, they moved north to New Castle, Indiana, so my grandfather could work in the new Chrysler factory. Over Thanksgiving this year, I was able to visit the Albany/Monticello area and find several graves of relatives.Annihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17107752242793690287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189728314897448501.post-28623208792906922152015-01-06T07:12:42.846-05:002015-01-06T07:12:42.846-05:00Our daughters are in American Heritage Girls, and ...Our daughters are in American Heritage Girls, and they are both working on their Ancestor Detector badge this year, along with doing their first year in Genealogy in 4-H. One of the Ancestor Detector badge requirements is to learn about family heirlooms. We've all enjoyed going room to room in our house, telling our girls about this item, which used to belong to their GGG Grandfather, or made by their GG Grandmother. Interestingly enough, the Textile Arts badge in AHG also has a component of learning about and documenting family heirlooms as well. It's time well spent!Annihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17107752242793690287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2189728314897448501.post-24941466226583956512015-01-03T19:42:44.044-05:002015-01-03T19:42:44.044-05:00Kathy, I'm surprised at the folks that don'...Kathy, I'm surprised at the folks that don't want to know their ancestors' stories. I'm excited to try and uncover their stories! These people lived lives, they had meaning and felt things similar to how we feel now, yet in a different context and era. It seems we think of genealogy in the same way.
